St Annes Clock Tower

St Annes Clock Tower, Lytham

Stone Edge was called upon in 2009 to carry out conservation works to the old Midland Bank with its clock tower a main focal point in the centre of Lytham St Annes.

It was discovered that the main steel structure that supports the clock tower and cupola was badly eroded and was desperate need of building restoration.

Working alongside Terry Girdler, Conisbee Engineering and Conservation Architect Christopher Garrand.

Stone Edge completed a scheme of works and building restoration where a new structural steel frame was placed under the clock tower and then the entire clock tower was jacked up by 3mm and the load then transferred onto the new steel frame.

This building conservation approach to the works ensured that the bank could remain open during works and that the clock tower would not need to be taken down and re-built.

The works include/involved:

  • Installation of Cintec anchors to stabilise structure
  • Installation of new steel to take the load of the clock tower
  • Installation and inflation of flat jacks
  • Re-roofing of 2 adjacent code 8 lead roofs
  • All stonework adjustments, and repair associated with the works
  • Re-commission of 1904 clock and restoration of clock faces
  • Natural hydraulic lime pointing and stone repairs to façade
