The Leeds City Gallery was built between 1886-1888 by W. H. Thorp, as an extension to the Municipal Buildings to the west.
Built between 1878-1884 by George Corson, now housing Leeds Central Library, it is grade II listed building.
The Leeds Museum houses a collection of 20th-century British Art recognised by the British Government as a collection “of national importance”. Its collections also include 19th-century and earlier works.
The gallery opened on 3 October 1888 as Leeds City Art Gallery and was paid for by public subscription.
In 1912 the Leeds Art Collections Fund was formed to support the Gallery’s acquisitions, which it continues to do today. The Gallery is owned and administered by Leeds City Council.
Stone Edge was employed by Leeds City Council to restore sections of the façade, re-point stone masonry and repair various locations of heavy impact damage.
